How is ATAR calculated in Australia?
The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a percentile rank ranging from 0.00 to 99.95. It is calculated by your state’s curriculum authority using a process called statistical scaling, which adjusts raw subject scores to account for the difficulty of each subject and the cohort of students who sat it. This means two students with the same raw scores in different subjects may receive different ATARs. Each state uses a slightly different methodology: QCE, VCE, HSC, WACE, SACE, TCE, BSSS, and NTCET each have their own annual scaling tables.
